Exploring the future of secondary vocational education, higher education and science in the Netherlands

Why this exploration?

The world is changing at lightning speed. The Netherlands is facing major challenges: climate change, the energy transition, international security, demographic and socio-cultural changes. How do these challenges affect secondary vocational education, higher education and science in our country? Are changes needed? If so, which ones? What are the options? You can help addressing these questions!

What is the exploration about?

The exploration focuses on secondary vocational education (MBO), higher education (HO) and science in the Netherlands. The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science aims to develop a vision for these forms of education and research for the year 2040. A consortium of five parties is carrying out the exploration. They will publish a final report in June 2023.

Which elements shape the exploration?

The information for the final report is collected in a variety of ways:

  • literature study and international review
  • expert interviews
  • regional meetings with open registration (in Dutch)
  • themed meetings by invitation
  • an online panel
  • a forum page

Who can participate?

Anyone involved in secondary vocational education, higher education or science – for instance administrators, policymakers, teachers, researchers, students, parents, and company representatives.
